The Sexual Models the Erotic
Deep understanding of the sexual is the ultimate guide to accessing the spirit in every dimension of our reality.
We are not talking about sexual technique. Sexual technique, even when important, is technical at best. Sexual technique can never make you a great lover. To be a great lover in all facets of your being you must listen deeply to the simple yet elegant spirit whisperings of the sexual. Nietzsche got something right when he said, "The degree and kind of man's sexuality reaches up into the topmost summit of his spirit."
In the previous chapter you just read a glimmering of what Hebrew tantra might mean when it says, "The sexual models the erotic." There we explored the four faces of the erotic:
1. Being on the inside
2. Intense yearning
3. Fullness of presence
4. The interconnectivity of all being
All of these are modeled primarily on the sexual. All of these qualities are essential to great sex.
"Being on the inside" means not on the inside of your sexual partner, for that is limited to the masculine sexual experience. Rather it is about being on the inside of the experience itself. Yearning is the essence of the sexual. So much so that it is often thought by poets and psychologists to be more pleasurable and intense than the fulfillment itself. Interconnectivity is nowhere more clearly manifested than in the sexual drive. We are born with an urge to merge. Finally, it is in the sexual where – in its ideal expression – we are most fully present to each other. Every gesture, fragrance, sigh, and whisper ripples through us as we listen deeply to the erotic instructions that well up from the depths of our soul's body.
All four of the primary faces of eros are modeled on the sexual. However – and this is the key – they are not exhausted by the sexual. It would be a great tragedy of the spirit if the only place where we experienced full presence, interiority, yearning, and primal interconnectivity was in the sexual. That would be to relegate eros to the narrow confines of the bedroom, when it needs to soar through our kitchens, our offices, our carpools, our classrooms!
The full pleasure of living, the joy of fullness and creativity, can only come when we reeroticize our lives. Until then, human beings will turn to the shadows of eros – rage, abuse, and violence – to remind themselves, through the intensity of those experiences, that they exist.
